Root Canal Treatment
How often have you experienced tooth pain? Toothache is usually caused whenever the nerve inside the tooth is irritated. Dental decay or loss of a tooth due to trauma is the main cause of toothaches. Dental pain can be highly troubling and can often radiate to the ears, jaws, and sinuses.
If you have experienced toothache recently, then root canal treatment can be done to save your tooth and you can be relieved of the pain as well.
Dr. Manoj Patil has been a renowned name in Kalyan. He has been practicing dentistry for more than 15 years now.

How would I know that I need a root canal treatment? Is pain the only symptom?
A root canal treatment is needed when the pulp of the tooth becomes inflamed or gets infected. However, to understand this let’s know about the anatomy of the tooth. The tooth is made up of three layers. The outermost and the hardest layer is called the enamel. Just below the enamel is dentin. The pulp is the innermost layer of the tooth. The pulp is the vascular portion of the tooth. The pulp extends from the crown to the tip of the root.
The root canal procedure involves removing the whole portion of the pulp. An adult tooth can survive without the pulp. This can make the tooth functional in the mouth.
The various signs and symptoms of an infected pulp are:
- Pain while chewing or biting
- Pain that starts on its own, especially during the night
- Sensitivity to hot and cold food
- Swollen gums
- Deep decay in a tooth
- Formation of a pimple on the gum
What happens in a root canal treatment?
As explained earlier, this procedure involves removing the pulp of the tooth. This can be done in the following steps:
- The tooth is examined clinically and then a radiograph is taken to access the extent of the damage of the tooth.
- The opening is done in the tooth to reach the canal.
- The pulp chamber and the root canal area are cleaned with the help of endodontic instruments. Irrigation solutions are used to clean the tooth completely and free it of infection.
- After the space has been cleaned, then a biocompatible material called gutta-percha is placed inside the canals with the help of appropriate sealing material. The canals are filled well at this step.
- After this, the filling is done in the tooth. A crown is placed over the tooth to restore its functionality.
Is the root canal very painful?
Modern techniques have made the procedure painless. Most of the patients are comfortable during the treatment.
You may feel some discomfort after the procedure is complete but that can be taken care of with the medications.
How expensive is the root canal procedure?
The cost of the root canal procedure depends upon the complexity of the problem and the location of the tooth in the mouth. The molars are difficult to treat so the expenses for the molar root canal are more than any other tooth. We use high-quality material at our clinic for the treatment.
Is root canal better than extraction?
Yes, saving your natural tooth is always better than extraction. Whenever a natural tooth is retained in the mouth, then the surrounding tooth structure remains in perfect harmony.
However, if a tooth is in a very bad condition, we do perform extraction and give replacement for the same.
Can all teeth be treated endodontically?
Most of the teeth can be treated with the help of a root canal procedure. If the tooth structure is compromised, we perform some advanced procedures such as post and core and clinical crown lengthening to increase the life of the tooth.
