Teeth whitening or bleaching
This is the basic cosmetic procedure. Our teeth can become stained or lose their natural white shade and become yellow. The various reasons for this could be:
- Food stains
- Tea or coffee stains
- Change in colour of a tooth due to trauma
- Fluoride stains
- Some medications can stain the teeth.
Procedure: The teeth are cleaned and made free from all the deposits like tartar and calculus with the help of scaling.The bleaching material contains hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. This procedure may take somewhere around 1-1.5 hours in a dental office.
Various other products are available in the market like whitening gels, toothpaste and whitening strips, etc. However, the results of the in-office dental bleach are approximately 5-8 times more than that of the over-the-counter products available.
Maintaining your teeth after bleaching
Bleaching is a temporary treatment and needs to be repeated after 1.5-2years. To maintain a longer effect of bleaching on the teeth you should:
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Avoid excessive consumption of tea and coffee
- Avoid other foods that stain the teeth
Dental veneers
These are thin shell-like material that resembles the tooth structure.
Veneers can be used to treat
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Discoloured teeth
- Closure of spaces between the teeth
The various veneers available at our clinic are:
- Porcelain Veneers: The enamel is ground to some extent and the impression is taken and sent to the lab. The grinding of enamel helps in better bonding of the veneer to the tooth surface.
- Composite Veneers: These can be fabricated at the clinic itself. The tooth can be etched and prepared and composite veneers can then be bonded to the tooth surface. They can be fabricated faster but have less strength than porcelain veneers.
Dental crowns and bridges
Dental crowns are the artificial tooth structure that resembles the tooth. The indications of the dental crown are:
- A broken or fractured tooth
- Root canal treated tooth
- Attrided tooth
- As a replacement of a missing tooth

- Porcelain fused to metal: The crown is made up of a metal alloy from inside and the porcelain layer above that resembles the tooth.
- All-ceramic crowns: These are completely made up of ceramic and do not have any metal layer inside them.
- Zirconium crowns: Zirconium is a white metal that is used extensively for the fabrication of crowns. Zirconium is a very strong metal and its colour does not change easily in the oral cavity.
Composite fillings
Composite is a resin-based material used for dental fillings. Composite comes in various shades and strengths. This is a material that bonds well with the tooth and the fillings are esthetically appealing.
Surgical correction of smile
This can be done for people who have:
- Gummy smile
- Small crown length
- Fractured or broken tooth
The correction of a gummy smile can be done with the help of gingivectomy. The extra gingival margins are trimmed and this enhances the clinical length of the crown structure.
This procedure can be done in chair-side anaesthesia. This is a minor surgical procedure with good results
Orthodontic treatment
When the teeth are misaligned to a great extent, they have to be treated with the help of orthodontic treatment. This treatment involves a planned movement of the teeth over a specific period of time. The various options available for orthodontic treatment are ceramic braces, metal braces and clear aligners.
