Dental Implants
Do you have a missing tooth? Do you have a badly decayed tooth that cannot be saved by a root canal procedure?
Many people have a missing tooth and are looking for a replacement. While there are different ways to replace your missing tooth. Dental implants are by far the closest replacement of a missing tooth structure.

What are dental implants?
Dental Implants are a replacement root structure of the teeth. They are placed surgically at the site of the missing tooth.
What is the procedure to get implants?
Dental implants are placed surgically in the bone. The various steps involved in the placement of implants are:
- Comprehensive radiographic examination: The condition of the bone, the space available for implants is assessed by various 2D and 3D imaging techniques.
- Evaluation of systemic health: A complete review of your body health is done. Special care is taken for patients who have a heart condition or any other debilitating condition like diabetes.
- Treatment: Once the treatment is planned, the patient is prepared to receive implants. The implants are placed under chair-side anesthesia. The site is left to heal. The implants are then left untouched and are allowed to fuse with the bone.
- Crown or bridge placement: Once the implants have integrated with the bone then a respective abutment is placed and the crown or bridge is placed over them.
Bone grafting
At times, there is not sufficient bone available for the placement of the implants. If the implants are placed in an area where there is not much bone available then there could be chances of failure of implants. To avoid this, bone grafting is done. Bone grafting is a procedure where several bone graft materials are placed at the surgical site.
The various options could be a natural bone graft or a synthetic bone graft.
What are the various teeth replacement options available after the placement of implants?
The various replacement options could be:
- Removable: This is just like your traditional removable dentures. The only difference is that the base of the denture has a metal frame that attaches to the implant abutment. This could be removed for cleaning purposes every day and can be fixed back comfortably by the patients.
- Fixed: This is more like a crown or bridge. Here the replacement tooth is permanently screwed or cemented into the abutment. This cannot be removed by the patient.
What are the post-operative instructions?
- Do not spit for 24 hours after the surgery
- Take the medication as prescribed
- Do not smoke for a week after the implants have been placed
- Keep yourself hydrated. Do not use a straw to drink water
- Avoid hard food. Diet should be very soft for a few days after the surgery
Can implants be placed in the same appointment as my tooth is removed?
Yes, immediate placement of implants is a common practice these days. This is done to reduce the time to get implants. This can be done the same day as the tooth has been extracted and hence saves the patient from undergoing one more surgery.
However, this cannot be done in all cases. Various aspects such as infection in the underlying tooth and the amount of damage caused to the bone during removal of the tooth need to be assessed.
What are the benefits of implants?
- Preservation of the alveolar bone: When a tooth is removed, then the surrounding alveolar bone starts resorbing. When implants are placed, they integrate with the bone and behave like a natural tooth and prevent the bone from resorbing.
- Best replacement of a natural tooth: Since they are fixed inside the bone, the prosthesis above them fits well in the mouth and gives a better appearance to the patient.
- Long-lasting: Implants last longer than conventional dentures and bridges as well.
- Less limitation on food intake: There are a few restrictions that come with dentures and bridges. However, implant-supported prostheses have a strong foundation under them hence there are fewer food restrictions
